Tribute to Phil O Donnell
14th January 2008
A FITTING TRIBUTE FOR PHIL O?DONNELL
It is the perfect legacy that Motherwell?s main stand will be renamed after Phil O?Donnell as a lasting tribute to their skipper who died after collapsing on the field in a match against Dundee United.
O?Donnell was a great professional and ambassador for his club and the sport. The emotional scenes of the hundreds of mourners who attended his funeral and the enormous shrine of scarves and flowers outside Fir Park shows just how much the Motherwell skipper will be missed.
The midfielder will always be remembered as a Fir Park legend. He was still a teenager when he scored in Motherwell?s amazing 4-3 Scottish Cup final triumph over Dundee United in 1991. He returned to the club after spells at Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday and was instrumental in Motherwell?s amazing start to this season.
The dignified way that Mark McGhee has acted during this difficult time has been very impressive. McGhee refused to accept that O?Donnell?s death puts football into perspective. Instead he said that the moving tributes paid to O?Donnell show just how special football really is. Very well said.
