TALKING A GOOD GAME

"The basics of what Barcelona did were very similar to our own, from the warm-ups to their set-piece work and passing drills. The only difference is the Barcelona lads could control the ball."
Bradford boss Stuart McCall makes an unlikely comparison between his side and the Spanish giants.

"He's quick, he's red, he talks like Father Ted, Robbie Keane!"
Liverpool fans have already come up with a chant for new signing Robbie Keane.

?I'm not much of an athlete, I eat a lot of McDonalds. I'm probably overweight for an athlete."
Canadian archer Jay Lyon, who weighs 15 stone 3 pounds, is probably not the best advert for the Olympic Games.

DISAPPOINTING START FOR DONS

Aberdeen started their Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign in disappointing fashion on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Goals from debutant Andy Barrowman and Roy McBain were enough to give the Highlanders their first ever victory over the Dons in a competitive match.

Jimmy Calderwood will have to get his troops back up and running after the defeat with difficult matches against Motherwell and Rangers looming over the horizon.

Aberdeen had played well up until Barrowman?s goal just before the half hour mark but they could not find an equalizer and the quicker new signing Tommy Wright regains his fitness the better for the Dons.

FIRST GOLD AT GAMES FOR BRITAIN

Cyclist Nicole Cook bagged Britain?s first gold medal of the Beijing Olympic Games. The 25-year-old from Wales won a thrilling 126-kilometre women?s road race in appalling conditions.

It is good news after the earlier disappointment of boxer Frankie Gavin failing to make the required weight by three pounds.

The 22-year-old lightweight was a huge medal hope and had apparently received £70,000 of lottery money to help him get to Beijing so it is disheartening that his Olympic Games ended before they had even begun.

However the Olympics seem to have been met with a great sense of apathy in Scotland, which is surprising given that it is the world?s most famous sporting event.

But there is no doubt that when the event comes slightly closer to home to London in 2012 there will be a far greater amount of public interest.
